Scovill Zoo’s education programs offer opportunities for animal lovers of all ages to discover the animal kingdom. With Zoo Academy classes, guided tours, and a fantastic Mobile Zoo, Scovill Zoo provides fun, hands-on connections to the animal world.

 

NEW! Zoo Buddies

An all-new animal adventure awaits 3 – 5 year olds and their adult guest(s). Can you waddle like a penguin, hoot like an owl, or leap like a lemur? Come discover and play as we learn about a new animal each session. Through the use of short stories and hands on activities we will make connections with some amazing animals. Participants will get to take home their very own Zoo Buddy after each class. Call 421-7435 to register or visit the online registration page found here.

Winter Classroom Programs

Our winter classroom programs are designed for specific grade levels (Pre K – 12) with the Next Generation Science Standards. Your class or group can come to our classroom at the zoo, or we can come to you.

Fee: $75 per class (up to 30 students) at the zoo. $100 per class + mileage to and from your location.

Movin’ & Groovin’

Grade: Pre K – 1
Program Length: 1 hour

Through role-playing exercises, you’ll learn how and why animals move in different ways. Meet and touch live animals that walk, crawl, slither and hop.

 

Animal Senses

Grade: K – 1
Program Length: 1.5 hours

Explore the senses: sight, smell, sound, touch and taste. With imaginative, interactive activities, as well as live animals and biofacts, you’ll discover how the 5 senses help animal survive and meet their needs. You’ll also compare human senses to those of animals.

Creature Cover Up

Grade: K – 1
Program Length: 1.5 hours

Explore the unique ways animals play hide and seek by using camouflage in their habitat to help them survive.

Habitats ‘Round the World

Grade: 1 – 3
Program Length: 2 hours

Did you know that all organisms need the same components of a habitat in order to survive: food, water, shelter, and space? With the use of live animals, photos, and biofacts, you’ll learn how animals meet these basic needs in a variety of habitats around the world.

Learning about Life Cycles

Grade 1 – 3
Program Length: 1.5 hours

Learn about the lifecycles of insects, birds, and amphibians and discover how they differ from human development.

Remarkable Reptiles

Grade: 2 – 5
Program Length: 1.5 hours

Explore the world of live snakes, lizards, turtles, and crocodiles! Activities will focus on each type of reptile.

 

Float Your Boat

Grade: 3 – 6
Program Length: 2 hours

Study buoyancy and density with experiments using the scientific method.

The Raptor Report

Grade: 4 – 6
Program Length: 2 hours

Dissect owl pellets in a hands-on lab to scientifically explore raptor diets. Meet a live bird of prey, and discover the adaptive tools raptors have to be successful predators in their environment.

Endangered Species

Grade: 6 – 8
Program Length: 1.5 hours

Dig deep into the world of endangered species by getting up close with some of the zoo’s resident endangered species. With live animal visits and the help of biofacts investigate why these creatures are vanishing, how it is affecting the world around them, and what can be done to help protect them.

Workin’ on the Wild Side*

Grade: 9 – 12
Program Length: 2 hours

Love animals? Learn about various zoo careers by job shadowing a zoo keeper and assisting with simple keeper tasks. *Onsite only at Scovill Zoo.
